Why read Dark Matter? Heres why.
Jason Dessen is an average guy with a loving wife, Daniela, and a son, Charlie. Jason works as a professor at Lakemont college and Daniela is an artist but both of them set their big aspirations aside to raise a family. At the bar, Jason celebrates with his former college roommate, Ryan Holder on winning the Pavia Prize. On the walk home, Jason is kidnapped. The man directs Jason to go to a remote hangar where Jason is injected with a mysterious drug. Jason awakes in Velocity Laboratories where everyone not only knows Jason but praises him. When Jason is debriefed by a member of the lab, Amanda, he asks for a moment to himself and escapes through the bathroom window. Jason travels to his home in Logan Square and notices that his house is not his, everything is different. Jason travels to the hospital thinking he has a brain tumor but that is not the case. Jason says, “This is not my world” (104). Jason's kidnapper is another version of Jason from a different multiverse that
seeked out Jasons life. Jason finally escapes the lab by entering the box and traveling to different multiverses to find his family and take it over from the other Jason. On this journey, Jason enters different versions of Chicago and finds out that there are more Jason's than just two, there are hundreds. A war for Daniela and Charlie has begun and the original Jason's life is wanted more than ever.
A major component of Dark Matter that is really important is Jason's drive to get back to Daniela and Charlie. As Jason travels through contrasting multiverses, he has the chance to give up and start a new life in a different dimension. Although he has this opportunity, Jason does not give up and strives to get back to his family. Jason's worst fear is to lose his family and he almost dies trying to get to them. Jason says, “Experimental physics-- hell, all science -- is about solving problems” (79). Similarly, Jason needs to break through the wall that is in front of him and find his family.
My favorite part of the book was the science. Dark Matter was nothing like I had ever read before. Not only was the writing style unique but I was captivated by how Blake Crouch made my mind spin. The scientific adventure is truly amazing. Although science is not my favorite subject in school, the idea of traveling into different realities by superposition was an amazing concept to read about. “It's terrifying when you consider that every thought we have, every choice we could possibly make, branches into a new world” (112). To travel into different realities is achieved by using thoughts. The choice Jason doesn't make is made into another universe. Through all the universes that he could travel into, Jason needs to search out only one; his. Jason needs his family. The scientific component of this novel truly captivated me.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch is my favorite book I have ever read. I wanted to read more then what was assigned to me every night. I found myself not just reading 20 pages for homework but sometimes 40 to 60 pages. I could not put the book down. This book intrigued me like no other book has done. Dark Matter was not just a science fiction novel but a thrilling and suspenseful masterpiece that captivates romance, action, and a compelling plot. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a breathtaking read and unexpected twists and turns. I believe if you enjoy science, you will enjoy this novel. In the end, I loved this novel and everything about it. Hopefully, you will enjoy Dark Matter as much as I did if you choose to enter the wild adventure of Jason Dessen.
