The Love for English
English has always been my favorite subject at U of D Jesuit and has challenged me to become a better writer throughout my years here. Whether I am writing a lab report in science or doing a DBQ essay for a government paper, my writing skills have developed from my english classes. Freshman year was probably my hardest and one of my least favorite years of english. Instead of writing essays and talking about literature, it was focused on nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Although this class developed my grammar, it was super boring. Next year I had english II which I enjoyed the most out of all the english classes. This is the year we made the transition from grammar to American literature. We also read arguably my favorite book ever, "The Great Gatbsy." Going into Junior year I liked English more than the other classes I was taking. English III was interesting but not my favorite, I can only take so much British Literature. I am excited for English IV and contemporary literature this year.
I do like to read but I definitely do not do enough of it. I think reading just makes a person smarter and more competent. Reading is something I want to do more of but I feel like I dont have the time. I am taking Contemporary Literature hoping I can come out of the class wanting to read more.
As I said in my last response, I hope to come out of this class with a love for reading. Right now I feel like reading is a bourdon and something I do not want to do. I also hope to find new genre of books I enjoy.

I feel the same way with how you feel about reading and have similar goals.
ReplyDeleteGood post Chris, also agree with the Great Gatsby being the best book ever
ReplyDeletecool post Chris, I agree with you, not a fan of all the grammar,
ReplyDeletegreat stuff here man, love the detail
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Chris, and congratulations on your first blog post! I agree that classes that focus on novels are a bit more enjoyable than those that focus on grammar. I also used to think there was not enough time for reading. Now, I listen to audiobooks in the car and make sure I read each night before bed. However, my reading list grows, and I still think there isn't enough time for reading - haha. I hope this class helps you find titles that are enjoyable to you!
ReplyDeleteMy skills from english class also carry over to other subjects when writing DBQ's. "The Great Gatsby" is also one of my favorite books.
